Public service: 20 model police stations for city soon

SSP promises better facilities, staff; SP believes move will have no impact.

LAHORE:

City police will soon set up 20 model police stations with proper facilities and staff with a good performance record, SSP (admin) Tariq Abbas told The Express Tribune.

He said a proposal had been prepared and that a meeting could be called this week to approve it. He said four police stations each in the City and Cantonment divisions and three each in the remaining four divisions have been selected for the purpose. He said with the setting up of model police stations, police would be able to enhance liaison with the public.

Besides the right number of vehicles for patrolling, these police stations will have computers, printers, fax machines, television sets, water dispensers and newspapers.

SSP Abbas said model police stations will all have women constables. He said these would be appointed in consultation with the deputy inspector general (operation) and capital city police officer (CCPO).

Talking to The Tribune, an SP, however, said the move would not have any impact on the performance and efficiency of policemen. He said instead of cosmetic changes, funds should have been allocated for buildings for at least 30 police stations operating from rented quarters.

He said each case should be given a serial number so that investigations can be tracked for efficiency.

He said fuel allocations and the number of patrolling vehicles for these police stations would be the same as the current norm.  Also, he said, model police stations would have no attached accommodation or mess for officials on duty.
