KARACHI: Sukhan police claimed to have arrested three members of a seven-member dacoit gang and seized Rs4.7 million, seven stolen mobile phones and illegal weapons from their possession, on Saturday. According to police, the group has been involved in more than 100 cases of robbery.

Speaking during a joint press conference, Malir SSP Irfan Bahadur and Investigation SSP Haider Raza informed media that in the most recent incident of robbery, the dacoits chased and looted cash from the owner of an easy load franchise, while he was on his way to deposit Rs8.8 million in a bank. The dacoits snatched all his money and fled, they said.

It took police around 40 days to trace the location of the accused with the help of CCTV footage and other technical support. The accused were finally arrested from Bhains Colony. According to SSP Bahadur, a police party conducted a raid in the wee hours of Saturday and arrested Nadeem, Mehdi Hassan and Jinsar Sethar. The remaining four members of the dacoit gang are still on the run and police are conducting raids in different areas to arrest them, he said.

All members of the gang belong to rural Sindh, said SSP Bahadur, adding that the arrested dacoits revealed during interrogation that they have committed more than 100 robberies. They have been arrested previously as well and were out on bail, he said.

According to police, members of the dacoit gang used to hide out in their ancestral lands after committing crimes, which made it difficult to trace and catch them.

SSP Bahadur also said that only a fraction of the stolen money has been recovered and most of it was in the possession of the accused on the run. Each of them had received a share amounting from Rs1 to Rs1.2 million, he added.

In response to a question, SSP Bahadur assured that the accused will not be able to get bail again. "We have solid evidence against them this time around," he said.
