The new 'Cats' trailer is anything but 'purr-fect'

Taylor Swift mutated into a cat? Um, okay then...

The first official glimpse into the star-studded remake of classical musical Cats dropped on Thursday.

In what Universal labelled as "digital fur technology", the film uses the actors' faces and covers their bodies in computer-generated fur as they sing and dance on a larger-than-life set.

The trailer racked up more than 100,000 views in the first hour and the #Cats hashtag quickly became the top trend on Twitter.

The plot of the film, according to IMdb, features "a tribe of cats called the Jellicles that must decide yearly which one will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life."

The film is to be released in December, featuring singing sensation Taylor Swift, along with Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Idris Elba and James Corden. Their faces have been morphed into talking cats and frankly, we are not sure if our eyes were quite ready for that.

Cats has been directed by Britain's Tom Hooper, who won an Oscar for The King's Speech, the first movie adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit stage musical. So who knows? Maybe it will be worth the watch.
