Pakistan, Iran talk border coordination in Islamabad huddle
Updating border maps, conducting joint border surveys underscored in Pakistan-Iran Higher Border Commission meeting
“Iran is taking keen interest in minimising energy shortage in Pakistan,” said Iranian Consul General Mohammad Hossain Bani Asadi.
The second round of the Pakistan-Iran Higher Border Commission was held in Islamabad to find ways to enhance border coordination, the Foreign Office said on Thursday.
The Pakistani delegation was led by Director General of Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri while Iran's Director General of International Legal Affairs Abbas Bagherpour Ardekani spearheaded their delegation.
The neighbours underscored the need to update border maps as well as border pillar descriptions and carrying out joint border surveys.
"During the session, the two sides held constructive discussions for effective implementation of existing border mechanisms within the relevant frameworks including Agreement for Administration of Pakistan-Iran border of 1960," the official statement said.
Islamabad and Tehran also agreed to bolster mutual cooperation in these areas with both sides reaffirming their commitment to expedite opening new border crossing points.
The HBC is a mechanism for consultations between the two countries to discuss all border-related issues for enhanced coordination at different levels. The first session of the commission was held in Tehran two years ago.
The second session was held as a follow-up of the decision taken by the leadership of the two countries during Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to Iran in April this year.
The two countries share more than 900 kilometre-long border.
