Pakistan to contest rejection of EU package

To prepare line of action to win duty-free access to EU textile markets.

KARACHI:

Textile Minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin has said that he will approach commerce and foreign affairs ministries this week to chart a joint line of action against rejection of European Union tariff concession package in the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Talking to the media at a pre-launch ceremony for Pakistan Textile City on Thursday evening, Shahabuddin said Pakistan would not give up efforts for winning duty-free access to the European Union for its textile products.

“Things do not remain static and therefore WTO’s rejection of the EU package is not a permanent feature. We will devise a strategy to contest the case and pursue the matter with EU,” he added. “Market access is a must for our textile sector and we will visit many countries to achieve trade benefits.”

Sindh Chief Minister’s Adviser on Investment Zubair Motiwala called for ensuring supply of gas and water to the textile city. Zahid Zaheer of the textile city said the sale of plots would begin in mid-July and infrastructure development would be completed in the next two years.

He said the project management was committed to developing the first textile processing zone which would comply with rules and requirements of World Trade Organisation and ISO 14001.
