Car sales scam: Partial refund offer by accused rejected

Muzaffargarh district police chief accused of collusion.

LAHORE:

The Punjab chapter of the National Accountability Bureau has rejected a voluntary refund offer in Rs1.1 billion car sales scam.

The Bureau has directed Saima Sultan, wife of late Sultan Mehmood, owner of Sialkot Suzuki Motors, to return the entire amount, Rs1.1 billion adjusted for interest.

NAB officials told The Express Tribune they have so far traced and frozen assets worth Rs380 million owned by Saima Sultan.

These, they said, included, showrooms, residential plots, houses and bank accounts.

They said that according to complaints received in 2010, Sialkot Suzuki Motors had recieved Rs1.1 billion from at least 150 people in 2008 to provide them with brand-new cars at below the going market rate.

They said Muzaffargarh district police officer, Rao Munir Ahmed Zia, (Sialkot SP in 2008) was accused of protecting the company.

They said DPO Zia had excused himself from appearance on June 28, saying that he was attending a training course.

The names of Saima Sultan and her accounts officer, Khalid, have been placed on the exit control list, officials said.
