ISLAMABAD:
The body of a cook, working at the home of a professor of a large university in the federal capital, was found hanging inside his quarters on Tuesday morning.

According to a statement given to the police by Quaid-i-Azam (QAU) Physics Professor Dr Arif Mumtaz, 26-year-old Muhammad Waqas used to work as a cook at his home and used to live in the attached servants quarters.

Dr Mumtaz told the police that Waqas had been working for him for the past five years.

On Monday evening, Waqas served dinner for Dr Mumtaz and then retired to his quarters for the night. A few hours later, his wife went to the servant quarter to ask something of Waqas. She kept knocking on the door but received no answer.

She narrated the tale to the physics professor upon returning to their room. Perturbed, Dr Mumtaz went to the room to see for himself what the matter was. He finally managed to get a glimpse inside and saw Waqas’ body hanging from the ceiling fan with a noose around his neck. The professor said that he quickly helped lower the corpse to the ground and immediately called the police.

Islamabad Police Homicide Unit Investigator Muhammad Ghous told The Express Tribune that Waqas’ body was shifted to the Polyclinic hospital in the presence of officers from the Secretariat police.

Moreover, he said that they have recorded Dr Mumtaz’s statement.

Noting that only a post-mortem can determine the exact cause of Waqas’ death, Ghous said that given the facts available at this point, it appeared to be a case of suicide.

This was echoed by Secretariat Police Station SHO Inspector Asjad. Ghous said that after completing all legal formalities, Waqas’ body was handed over to his brother, Ghulam Abbas.

To a question, the homicide officer said that the victim’s brother has yet to file an application against anyone or requesting legal action.

He added that Abbas and his family had left the federal capital with Waqas’ body for burial in their native town in Tehsil Khariyan.

The investigator said that the police was still probing the case.

Body recovered

The Bara Kahu police have recovered the corpse of a 37-year-old man near a fuel pump along Amanullah Road.

According to the police, the body was found lying over stones. Its state of decomposition showed that it was at least a day old.

Islamabad Police Homicide Unit Inspector Abdul Sattar told The Express Tribune that they have recovered an Afghan identity card from his pocket which identified him as Ghancha Khan who hailed from the Tarwan district.

He added that the victim appeared to be a drug addict and that it was possible he died of a drug overdose.

Police seized the body and paramedics later shifted it to the Polyclinic for an autopsy.
