The Prime Minister has thus agreed to the constitution of a special committee to steer the nation out of the economic crisis, by serving the Ministry of Finance well. While the idea of a charter of economy had been introduced by Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif and supported by Asif Ali Zardari as well, Maryam Nawaz took no time to reject it. And this leads the House back to square one.
While the PTI had its own internal rifts, like those involving former information minister Fawad Chaudhry and Special Assistant to PM Naeemul Huq, it appears the PML-N is experiencing similar turbulence. In her rejection of the charter, Maryam Nawaz maintained that her viewpoint differs from that of Shehbaz Sharif on the proposed charter, which exposes troubles within the party. Furthermore, it points towards Shehbaz Sharif trying to clinch a deal with the establishment.
Maryam Nawaz’s rejection certainly throws a spanner in the works and is evident of the fact that key figures can hardly be unified enough to allow the country and the economy to advance, whether it is inter or intra-party politics. The formation of a special committee was approved by the Prime Minister based on suggestions from opposition parties.
However, constant disagreement and conflicting statements hours after the government issues official ones makes a mockery of our set-up. Proper decorum needs to be called for during assembly meetings instead of the current norm of members bellowing words disregarding what others have to convey. The charter should be given importance regardless of friction now, since an agreement had already been reached.
