SECP official placed in NAB custody for 11 days
Ziaul Rasheed was arrested by the anti-graft watchdog in Park Lane Company corruption reference
ISLAMABAD:
An accountability court on Thursday granted an 11-day physical remand to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for an official of Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) in connection with the fake bank accounts and money laundering case.
Ziaul Rasheed, a deputy registrar of SECP, was arrested by the anti-graft watchdog in Park Lane Company corruption reference.
The NAB officials produced Rasheed before the accountability court-I Judge Muhammad Bashir to seek 14-day physical remand of the suspect.
NAB Prosecutor Sohail Arif pleaded that the accused had been found involved in a loan extension worth Rs1.5 billion to Park Lane company.
However, Rasheed’s counsel opposed the request of the prosecution and stated that the anti-corruption watchdog should inform the court what violation of law had been committed by his client.
He argued that NAB had no solid grounds to obtain physical remand of Rasheed who was a deputy director of SECP.
The court, however, granted physical remand of the accused and directed NAB to produce him again after completion of his detention period.
Informed sources said that Rasheed’s arrest had been made in connection with an ongoing probe into a case of alleged fake accounts and money laundering against high-profile politicians, businessmen and bankers.
Meanwhile, an accountability court in Islamabad extended physical remand of fake bank accounts case suspect Dawoodi Morkas by four days.
After the physical remand of the accused ended on Thursday, the suspect was presented before Judge Muhammad Bashir of accountability court-1 where Dawoodi filed a petition requesting pardon from the court and maintained that he had no link with the case.
The accountability court judge maintained that awarding pardon was not under his jurisdiction and that the court could only grant him bail.
The court, while extending the physical remand of the suspect by four days directed the authorities to present him on June 24.
