Government allocates Rs749m for upgrading high schools

Two new model colleges to be built in the federal capital

ISLAMABAD:
The federal government has allocated Rs4.797 billion for ongoing and new schemes of the education sector for the fiscal year of 2019-20.

Under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the Federal Education and Professional Training Division, a total of Rs2.372 billion have been allocated for ongoing schemes, while Rs2.425 billion have been allocated for new schemes of the education ministry.

The government has allocated Rs749 million for upgrading high schools in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT). It was not immediately clear whether the funds were meant for the advanced phases of the Prime Minister’s Education Reforms Programme (PMERP) launched by deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif in 2015 to upgrade the 423 schools and colleges of the federal capital.

The government has also set aside Rs150 million for the establishment of the Islamabad Model College for Boys in Pakistan Town in the federal capital.

A further Rs 100 million has been allocated for the establishment of the Islamabad Model College for Girls in Sector G-13/1.


The government has also allocated Rs94 million for setting up a secretariat for the National Curriculum Council (NCC). The council is supposed to devise the unified curriculum for the entire country.

As part of the ongoing schemes, budget documents showed that the government has allocated Rs500 million for the establishment and operation of Basic Education Community Schools in the country.

A further Rs500 million have been earmarked for improving education-related Human Development Indicators of the country. This task has been handed to the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD).

Among new schemes, a billion rupees have been allocated for the technical, vocational education and training (TVET) sector to fund a development project through Technology Transfer (Knowledge Economy Initiative).

Separately, the government has allocated Rs100 million for the modernization and standardization of a national examination system across the country.
