Chhalawa vs Wrong No 2: Who will score a homerun this Eid?
Pakistani films will fight for the box office glory with a few Hollywood options and no Bollywood in cinemas
KARACHI:
As Bollywood films continue to be banned, this Eid will primarily revolve around Pakistani and Hollywood films. Apart from Chhalawa and Wrong No 2, Hollywood releases such as Secret Life of Pets 2, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Disney's Aladdin and Jon Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum will be available in cinemas near you. Marvel's upcoming offering Dark Phoenix will join the rest a week later on June 14.
Mehwish Hayat and Azfar Rehman's starrer Chhalawa looks like a typical Masala film, expected to draw some crowds this holiday season. The film's trailer promises an emotional roller-coaster with a few of those mindless sequences that are known to cheer up the Eid audience. A light-hearted romantic comedy, Chhalawa also stars Ashir Wajahat, Mahmood Aslam and Adnan Shah Tipu.
Acclaimed film-maker Yasir Nawaz’s upcoming venture Wrong No 2 is all set to release this week. Advance booking opened in cinemas across the country a while back and the cast and crew were busy promoting the film with full flare. Since both Wrong No 2 and Chhalawa don’t feature any major superstar pairings, they are expected to give each other a tough time at the box office.
Disney's live action Aladdin released globally last month, however, the film will hit the screens in Pakistan this week. The Guy Richie directorial earned an estimated $86.1 million in the first week of its release in the US, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Warner Bros and Legendary Entertainment's sequel to 2014's Godzilla will also be available as an option, along with Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum and Avengers: Endgame .
Keanu Reeves stars as retired hitman John Wick, this time being chased by an army of killers after a contract is put on his head. Also starring are Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane and Anjelica Huston.
The sequel to Secret Life of Pets’ latest addition will also release on Eid. Harrison Ford is the latest addition to the animated saga’s cast. He plays the most fearless dog on the countryside, called Rooster.
“It was fun,” Ford said of his involvement. “It was easy. They do most of the work, but I really enjoyed it. I really appreciate the quality they bring to the making of these films.”
Sophie Turner headlined Marvel's Dark Phoenix will join the rest of the films in the week after Eid.
"I was really excited when they told me because in The Last Stand, the Dark Phoenix storyline was a subplot and in this it’s the main plot and it being one of the most loved comic books in the X-Men world, it definitely felt right to do it again. I was so excited,” Turner said in an interview.
Turner previously admitted there was “a lot of pressure” to get the esteemed story right a second time around. Elevating it from the subplot to main plot, the latest offering of the franchise finds the X-Men torn apart after Jean Grey (Turner) is corrupted by the cosmic, all-powerful Phoenix Force.
Our fingers are crossed as the curtain opens for the mega film season on Eid.
