PESHAWAR:
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife Department has imposed a Rs50,000 fine on a shoe-maker for using snakeskin to make a pair of traditional Peshawari Chappals — rechristened Kaptaan Chappals — for Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The Wildlife department’s DFO said that they had seized the shoes made by popular craftsman Chacha Nooruddin. The shoes had been sent for laboratory testing. But the craftsman accepted his error and submitted a signed affidavit not to use the skin of an exotic animal in footwear again. He was, however, slapped with a fine of Rs50,000 under the Wildlife Act.

The shopkeeper has paid the fine as well after which, the confiscated pair of shoes were returned. Nooruddin’s son Islamuddin told The Express Tribune that they had made a pair of Kaptaan Chappals for PM Imran using snakeskin. He added that for this purpose they had imported the skin through a fan of the premier. He added that he was unaware importing exotic skins also violated the Wildlife Act adding that they completed all legal formalities while importing the skin.
