Aliza Akhtar died after a head-on car crash in New Jersey

NEW YORK:
Aliza Akhtar, daughter of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member Naveed Akhtar Waraich, died on Saturday after a head-on car collision in the United States.

A suspected drunk-driver, identified as Aliaksandr Tsytsenia, drove into Akhtar's vehicle after crossing over into the opposite lane. The accident took place in the Old Bridge area, a township in New Jersey.

Police arrested the 28-year-old Tsytsenia, who faces charges of vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, assault by car, and driving while intoxicated. Akhtar's 15-year-old sister was also traveling with her and was treated for injuries in a hospital.

Police said Tsytsenia tried to escape after the accident but was apprehended.

Akhtar, 19, was a promising student and was studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a full scholarship.

The news plunged the family into grief and shocked the large Pakistani community in New Jersey and New York. Members of the community mourned the death of the bright student, who was just beginning to carve out a great future for herself.
