LHC takes notice of SP’s absence from probe

LAHORE:
The chief justice of the Lahore High Court has taken action on its own on media reports alleging that former SP Rana Mansurul Haq of Saddar Police had physically assaulted a lady doctor.

An inquiry was initiated on April 22, 2010 after a local physiotherapist accused the police superintendant of courting her, developing intimate relations and then borrowing Rs6 million. According to a report prepared by the Special Branch, SP Mansur was approached by the doctor with another colleague. In the presence of several SHOs, the woman asked the SP to marry her or return her money.

The confrontation spiraled out of control and both parties allegedly tried to attack each other. The doctor alleged that SP Mansur ordered police officers to detain and beat her up, saying she was raped by the accused at his office. She accused him of attempting to implicate her in various fake cases after the incident to keep her from pursuing charges against him.

The doctor added that the SP had borrowed money from her family as well. The inquiry report stated that the SHOs of Satukatla, Sabzazar and City Raiwind police station may have been involved in the scam to coerce money out of the complainant. The accused SP has failed to appear before the inquiry officer DIG Major (retd) Mubasharullah despite receiving several notifications. The chief justice  directed the Punjab IGP to submit his report relevant to the case within two days.
