UAF researchers set to unveil biomass plant

A model project will initially provide power to 50 houses

Researchers at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad are all set to unveil the design of a bio-gasification plant. Through the project, low-cost electricity would be produced by using solid waste and biomass.

This was stated by University of Agriculture Faisalabad Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ashraf during his visit to Postgraduate Agricultural Research Station (PARS), UAF. Community College Principal Dr Haq Nawaz Bhatti, Punjab Bioenergy Institute Director Dr Ahsan, PRP Deputy Registrar Syed Qamar Bukhari and other prominent figures were also present on the occasion.

He directed the experts to create a model project by using sewerage sludge to produce biogas for 50 houses. He said the model was being used in many developed nations. He said alternative sources of energy such as wind, bioenergy and biofuel need to be applied to meet the energy demands of the country.

He said these alternative sources such as solar, bio and wind energy would help cope with shortages.

He added three newly constructed blocks at the main campus, including science block, students-teachers centre and ICT centre, would be shifted to solar power over the span of two months.

He directed the staff to promote renewable energy sources and develop technologies for the farming and industry at affordable prices.He directed the university experts to come up with innovative ideas to address the issues of the farming community and society.

He said agriculture was faced with different challenges that needed the immediate attention of the academia, researchers and the government.
