Hazara: Work on expressway to begin soon

"I was taking all the necessary steps to revive the project": Awan.

HARIPUR:

The construction of Hazara Expressway was likely to start in the current fiscal year, as land acquisition for the highway is almost finished. This was stated by National Assembly Standing Committee on Communication Chairman Muhammad Safdar Awan on Wednesday.

He said Rs4 billion had been released for acquisition of land between Hassanabdal and Mansehra section, which was 105 kilometres long. “The total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs55.67 billion, which has been funded by the Asian Development Bank,” he said, adding that the highway consists of four lanes and four interchanges. The first interchange was near Hassanabdal, while the second interchange was planned to be built at Haripur. The third interchange was located at Havelian, while the fourth interchange was being built at Mansehra

Awan also explained that the construction of a tunnel between Margalla Hills and Khanpur was initially planned to link the expressway with Islamabad.

However, the plan was shelved due to unknown reasons. He said he was taking all necessary steps to revive the project, which would significantly shorten the distance between Islamabad and Hazara Division.
