ISLAMABAD:
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Thursday demanded resignation of the National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, who, it said, has been displaying partiality towards ruling party lawmakers close to Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Addressing media after the National Assembly session, the PML-N Senior Vice President Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said the opposition lawmakers have lost trust in the speaker and therefore he should resign if he has any self-respect.

“The opposition wants to talk about public issues and inflation but we will have to do something if the speaker does not allow us to speak. He said the speaker interrupted the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto thrice during his address on Thursday.

“If you [speaker] are under Imran Khan’s pressure then you should better resign. The NA speaker would be respected only if he respects the house and the opposition,” he added.

Former foreign minister Khawaj Asif said the PML-N has announced rebellion against the speaker.  He said if the speaker continued with this tone then the opposition would not allow the house to function.

“The speaker ignores everyone when people who have special bonds with the prime minister take the floor. It is not a favour on part of the speaker to allow the opposition members to speak; it is the right of every member of the house to be able to present his view,” he added.

Khawaja Asif said the opposition would not allow the prime minister to appear in the parliament if the speaker did not change his attitude towards opposition.
