ISLAMABAD: The Uzbekistan Embassy on Wednesday commemorated the “Day of Memory and Honor”. The solemn ceremony saw representatives of the Uzbek Diaspora and their families permanently residing in Pakistan, to honour the memory of their ancestors.

During the event, the embassy handed over the “Ribbon of Honour”— which symbolizes the flag of Uzbekistan —to all members of the Uzbek diaspora. The participants honoured their ancestors and paid special respect and attention to the older generation, who made a worthy contribution to the maintenance of peace and development of their country.

Uzbek Ambassador Furqat Sidikov congratulated the participants for the “Day of Memory and Honour” (celebrated on May 9) and elaborated on the significance of this day in the development of a modern Uzbekistan and the education of the future generation.

The decisive participation of Uzbeks in the Second World War was particularly noted, and their generosity, nobility and humanism are being tested not only in relation to their loved ones but also to other people, who have suffered grief during that period.

Representatives of the Uzbek community noted that during the Second World War, the Uzbek people had shown unfeigned mercy by accepting about a million evacuated children, women, old people, sharing with them the last piece of bread and shelter.
