Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz said on Friday that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was not sentenced for committing any crime.

Taking to Twitter hours after the Supreme Court rejected the ailing ex-premier's plea of permanent bail on medical grounds, Maryam said: “Nawaz Sharif is not facing 'punishment' for committing any crime, rather he was punished for becoming people's voice.”

The PML-N supremo has "rendered immense sacrifices" which Maryam said will bear the "sweetest fruit". “The fruit of Nawaz’s sacrifices will be for the coming generations of the country.”

Addressing party supporters in the same tweet, she said Nawaz was struggling for them and he will not let them down.

The three-time prime minister was sentenced to a seven-year prison term after an accountability court convicted him in Al-Azizia reference. He had been imprisoned at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore since December 24, 2018.

On March 26, the Supreme Court had granted him a six-week bail in view of his health condition, however, earlier today the top court refused his request to go abroad for treatment.

The disqualified prime minister's bail application was rejected amid the speculation that Nawaz will not return to the country if he is allowed to go to London for treatment.

On Thursday, Nawaz's younger brother and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, who is already in London these days, had resigned from the chairmanship of Public Accounts Committee which also added to the rumours of NRO-type deal with the Imran Khan-led PTI government.
