WASA says monsoon plan ready
An emergency response unit will be ready with machinery and trained staff to pump out water from low-lying areas
RAWALPINDI:
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has given final shape to its monsoon plan for protecting low-lying areas of Rawalpindi in case of urban flood. WASA Managing Director Muhammad Tanveer said five camps will be set up for monitoring a relief work in case of unusually heavy rainfall which causes Nullah Leh burst its banks. These camps will be set up at Moti Mahal, Commercial Market, Khayaban Sir Syed, Bagh Sardaran and Liaquat Bagh. Moreover, a WASA emergency response unit will be ready with machinery and trained staff to pump out water from low-lying areas in shortest possible span of time. The cleaning of Nullah Leh has also started to allow water to flow easily, instead of overflowing in to the city, Tanveer said. Rawalpindi people use the water channel as garbage dump, which restricts flow of water causing urban flood. WASA managing director said that monsoon season lasts from July 15 to September 15. The agency plans in advance for the rainy season, so as to minimise the hardships of people.
