Family of the Sahiwal tragedy victims have approached the Supreme Court requesting the formation of a judicial commission to probe the case, Express News reported.

The family of people killed in Sahiwal tragedy submitting a plea in Supreme Court rejected the JIT report and argued that the Inspector General (IG) Punjab did not have the authority to form a commission regarding the incident.

The petition said that once the JIT was formed it tried best to protect the prime accused. They also alleged that the CTD wasted the evidence present on the crime site.

"JIT was aware of the accused quite well, however, despite knowing the accused it called victims for an identification parade, thereby JIT cannot be trusted," the family maintains.

They stated that the Lahore High Court was first approached for the formation of the judicial commission but the plea to form a committee was rejected.

“Federal government has the authority to form a judicial commission, however, in case of the government’s non-seriousness the court also has authority to form a judicial commission,” the petition argued.

"Facts will only be uncovered with the formation of judicial commission thereby we request the Supreme Court to form a judicial commission on the Sahiwal tragedy," it added.

Earlier in January, in Sahiwal Punjab police’s counter-terrorism department (CTD) in broad daylight stopped a vehicle and opened fire on four unarmed, innocent locals by involving them in a fake encounter.

The deceased included a woman and a child.  Police first termed the victims 'terrorists' however during the investigation they were proved innocent.
