PTI govt urged to declare farm emergency
Over 150,000 tons of standing and ready-to-cut wheat crop has been damaged only in Punjab

The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has urged the government to declare emergency in the agriculture sector and extend full support to the catastrophe-hit growers. In a statement, LCCI President Almas Hyder said rains and floods had caused huge damage to wheat and other crops, which posed serious food-security challenges. Over 150,000 tons of standing and ready-to-cut wheat crop has been damaged only in Punjab, which is known as the food basket of Pakistan. He called for initiating an immediate survey to assess the actual damage to crops and compensation for the growers. “If we stayed where we are today in terms of crop area and yield per acre, we will have around 30% less food available per capita in the next two decades,” the LCCI president added.
