ISLAMABAD: Teachers of public sector universities have expressed their reservations over the abysmal state of International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) where five faculty members were allegedly terminated by the varsity’s president while an association of academic staffers were deemed as illegal.

The sentiments were expressed as a delegation from federal universities called on the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) President Dr Mahboob Hussain.

Dr Hussain said that instead of improving the situation as the IIUI president had previously promised to FAPUASA, the varsity’s top official was allegedly mistreating many faculty members.

The FAPUASA president said that their organisation — which includes teachers from universities — had demonstrated a lot of patience on the matter. However, he stated that this was being considered as weakness on part of the FAPUASA.

He added that in a recent move, the IIUI president had issued legal notices to several faculty members and termed the formation of the Academic Staff Association (ASA) there as illegal.

“The right to form an association is provided under Article 17 of the Constitution of Pakistan,” said the FAPUASA president. “Terming it illegal is unconstitutional and shows malice on part of the IIUI president.”

IIUI teachers hope to meet with varsity boss

Dr Hussain demanded that the IIUI president should withdraw the illegal degree awarded to his son in absentia and that an FIR should be launched by the varsity against those responsible for using an alleged fake transcript of Preston University to grant the IIUI president’s son an exemption of 42 credit hours to complete his degree.

Moreover, pending inquiries over massive corruption cases should be completed urgently by unbiased and competent people from outside the IIUI to guard against any internal influences.
