Sanjay Dutt reveals 'Kalank' has emotional connection to Pakistan

His character, Balraj, also has something to do with his father, Sunil Dutt

Karan Johar's latest offering is a multi-starrer, Kalank.

The film stars Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapoor, and Sonakshi Sinha in pivotal roles. Kalank also marks the reunion of Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt after 22 years.

Alia recently shared her character, Roop, draws inspiration from Sanam Saeed's Kashaf in Zindagi Gulzar Hai.

Now, Sanjay, who plays Balraj in the film, has shared how his avatar has a emotional connection to his father and his roots in Pakistan, reported India Today.

Kalank is set in pre-Partition era. The Bhoomi actor revealed he took up the role of Balraj because it was his father Sunil Dutt's actual name. Sunil migrated from Pakistan to India at the time of Partition. Sanjay also shared how the idea of Kalank was mentioned by Yash Johar in 1993.

"During the shoot of Gumrah, Yash uncle had briefly mentioned about the story. Dharma Productions is like family; so when Karan approached me with the film, I had to do it," he shared. "It is also a coincidence that my character is named Balraj, which is my father's [Sunil Dutt] real name. He too came from Pakistan during Partition, so it has an emotional connect."

The actor also opened up on the experience of working with Madhuri after more than two decades. He said, "It was great to work with her again. I was a little nervous but she made things easy. She's got terrific command as an actor. We spoke about our kids. In fact, I made my children [Shahraan and Iqra] meet her when they dropped by on the sets."

Kalank is set to hit the screens on April 17 in India.
