KESC to raise power tariff... again

National Electric Power Regulatory Authority approved Rs 1.7 per unit increase in the tariff of KESC.

National Electric Power Regulatory Authority approved Rs 1.7 per unit increase in the tariff of the Karachi Electricity Supply Corporation on Monday.

NEPRA allowed the increase in line with its fuel adjustment formula and a formal notification has been issued.

The increase from 6 paisas to Rs 1.70 will be inducted in electricity bills in phases, from June to December.

According to NEPRA, the new tariff will not be applicable on life line consumers.

Power conservation

The Karachi Energy Conservation Programme is a new social service initiative for Karachi's energy usage policy, with a principal goal of saving 200MW of electricity in the city by 2011. The Programme was launched in partnership with the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) and the citizens of Karachi supported by Karachi Electric Supply Company.

Alina | 14 years ago | Reply For Sunday kesc can use the rain as an excuse but what about last night when power went off 10:30 at night till 4:00am and again from 9:30am till1:00pm? Kesc help line status was the same; no response.

But all hell broke loose on Sunday...My electricity went at 2 AM saturday and came back at 2 AM Sunday. On Sunday, I kept trying to call the KESC Help line, but it was engaged.

Syed A. Mateen | 14 years ago | Reply The biggest blunder which Musharraf government has made was to privatize KESC. At that time it was the newly appointed Federal Minister of Finance Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh who was then Federal Minister for Privatization. Had privatization of KESC been so essential, why did General (R) Musharraf did not offer KESC to people of Karachi to purchase the same? It was not only KESC but the entire assets of KESC including valuable piece of lands located at different places were sold out to the new management. Though Karachi is part of Pakistan but we are purchasing electricity from foreign owners who now own KESC and not government of Pakistan, nor people of Karachi. Now it up to the sweet will of the KESC management to sell the electricity at any rate. The tariff of KESC is been enhanced many times after the privatization, as the owners of KESC does not have to pay KESC month bill, as electricity is been sold to them without any cost. The best option for the people of Karachi is to install solar energy system at their place of residence, which will be only one time investment and ask the KESC owners to disconnect KESC connections without any further delay. I have received numerous complaints by KESC consumers from time to time and all of them are related to exorbitant billings. At some places, KESC has accused the customers that they had intentionally broken neutral wire, whereas at other places KESC has sent revised bills to its consumers on one pretext or the other. A Kunda connection is not a problem of honest KESC consumers. It is the fault of the KESC management that could not remove Kundas and the line losses are added in the monthly bills of honest KESC consumers. I do not think that KESC will be able to put an end to load-shedding, but the duration of load-shedding will keep on increasing and at the same time, KESC will keep on sending inflated bills to pay the hefty salaries and perks to the top KESC management. The government should take back KESC from its present owners and ask them to leave the country within 24 hours.
