PIMS to offer FCPS training to specialising doctors

CPSP teams expected to visit hospital next week

ISLAMABAD: In a bid to improve the services provided to patients at the hospital, the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) has decided to offer Fellow of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (FCPS), training to its officials working in various departments.

Teams from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) are expected to visit Pims next week for the purpose.

The FCPS training will be conducted in the endocrinology, Infectious diseases, paediatrics, oncology, chest surgery, breast surgery, thalassemia, bone marrow and emergency departments of the hospital.

Pims Executive Director Dr Raja Amjad Mahmood said that the CPSP teams are expected at the hospital on April 18 and April 19 to examine the departments and to see whether they meet all the parameters to offer training before approving the move.

He added that the training will ensure improved health facilities for patients apart from providing doctors working at the hospital a tremendous opportunity to enhance their skills without having to seek the training at specialized centres away from the hospital.

Dr Mahmood said that if the training programme is approved, Pims will become the first public sector hospital where more than one department would offer a speciality at any given time.

He added that a one-stop breast clinic has been set up for patients of breast cancer where patients can avail breast screening, biopsy, surgery and chemotherapy facilities, all under one roof.

Further, he said that an 18-bed ward has also been set up for cancer patients while swift renovation of different wards in the hospital was underway.

“The inauguration of the nephrology ward is expected to take place very soon,” he added.

He hoped that once the renovations at the hospital are complete, they will be comparable to wards at any private hospital in the country.

PMDC to revisit merit lists

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Association (PMDC) will be revisiting the merit lists for MBBS and BDS admissions after learning that there were discrepancies in the merit lists provided by the National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS).

The admission board of the council has directed to maintain the status quo until the NUMS discrepancies are addressed and a final admissions list for NUMS is approved and notified by the PMDC admissions board.

Moreover, the council’s admission’s board has approved medical admissions on the vacant seats of the Punjab University of Health Sciences, Khyber Medical University and the Jinnah-Sindh Medical University.

To protect the rights of students, some 136 applicants have been adjusted while they have been directed to contact their respective colleges to finalise their admissions.

However, the PMDC has clarified that it will not upgrade or add to the admissions list it has already issued.

Any application who does not avail the allocated seat, they will not be accommodated further nor will the vacant seat be filled at the college since admissions for the current academic year are closed.

Cardiology centre construction

Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) Executive Director Dr.Azhar Mehmood will be overseeing the construction of a 50-bed cardiac centre and a five-bed cardiology emergency in the Taunsa Sharif Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Dera Ghazi Khan.

The billion rupees project has been sanctioned by the Punjab government.

Previously, Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Usman Buzdar had sought recommendations on cardiovascular health facilities in the south Punjab district and had been briefed about the establishment of cardiac centres and the training of medical and paramedical staff by RIC officials. The CM had subsequently ordered rapid development on these projects.
