Transformers, feeders fail due to overload

PEPCO trying to upgrade transformers to ensure relief to consumers.

LAHORE:

Transformers and feeders for supplying power had failed due to the scorching heat in the country, and loadshedding timings have increased upto eight hours in urban and ten hours in rural areas.

According to details, power supply had been badly affected due to transformers and feeders tripping, and Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) officials had made no alternate arrangements to overcome the situation.

Pepco Director General Ijaz Qureshi on Wednesday attributed loadshedding to certain reasons. He said due to an increase in temperatures in the country in recent weeks, more people were using air-conditioners, leading to an increase in power demand.

He said power shortfall had become a serious issue and there was no surplus power in the Pepco system; however, he claimed that power generation will increase in July, as hydel power would be generated, due to an increase of water in rivers.

According to Qureshi, Pepco was supplying power according to the assigned load and was providing relief to consumers, but the situation had worsened when feeders and operators failed to operate in the summer season.

He added that Pepco was trying to upgrade and change transformers to ensure relief to consumers. Power generation in the country stood at: 14277 MW, demand at 17388 MW, and there was a shortfall of 3111 MW.
