Hundreds of employees of the Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) staged a sit-in in front of Fesco Headquarters on Canal Road here on Tuesday in protest against the alleged withdrawal of their free electricity allowance.
Employees from all Fesco sub divisions and other sections boycotted their work and assembled before the headquarters to shout slogans condemning the prime minister, federal minister for water and power, the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) chairman and other functionaries.
The carried banners inscribed with demands for the restoration of their quota of free electricity units.
Addressing the protestors, Wapda Employees Pegham Union general secretary Mian Iftikhar Ahmad said that Wapda workers were striving to earn praise for the company by providing quality services to consumers. In response, the cabinet had decided to withdraw the quota provided to employees, he said.
Ahmad said that the employees of the gas companies, Pakistan International Airlines and the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited got special privileges as part of their salary packages, so Wapda employees should keep their free power benefits.
He demanded that the government not only change its decision to withdraw the facility, but also increase the number of free units given to employees as it was their right.
