KARACHI:

Inland revenue inspectors of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) ended their strike on Tuesday after they received a written assurance of their promotion from the organisation.

The FBR inspectors had called a nationwide strike on June 16 as the government was not agreeing to their demand for promotions from grades 14 to 16. They contended that all inspectors in other departments are grade 16 officials.

Addressing a press conference at the Karachi Press Club on Tuesday, Inspector’s Action Committee member Shahabuddin Bhatti and Inspector Sohail Naqvi said that their one-point agenda of promotions to grade 16 was accepted by the FBR in a meeting. “The FBR told us that the matter has been taken up by the chairman and the revenue secretary and [the promotions] will be finalised by July,” said Naqvi.

The assurance letter was signed by Asrar Raouf, the FBR revenue division addition secretary, and two chief commissioners of the revenue division.

According to Inspector Bhatti, there are 1,248 inland revenue inspectors in Pakistan — around 560 are in Karachi and are grade 14 officers.
