The will of the people

Rizwan Yassin June 06, 2010

KARACHI: This is with reference to your editorial of June 4 titled ‘The will of the people and the constitution’. You correctly said that it is the constitution which is the embodiment of the will of the people of Pakistan. Consequently, to undermine the constitution is to undermine the will of the people of Pakistan. If the constitution is the embodiment of the will of the people, who represents the nation’s will? The answer is obvious — parliament.

The recent amendments to the constitution were made by the people’s representatives. Regardless of what people may think, the 18th amendment represents the will of the people and those who disagree with that have no choice really but to accede to the will of the people.
