You have never had a friend like Will Smith’s Genie. That is, unless you have a friend who can maybe make you into a prince?

In the first full-length trailer for Disney’s Aladdin, which hit social media Tuesday evening, actor Mena Massoud’s street urchin uses one of the three wishes granted to him by Genie’s magic lamp to become royalty.

But before granting his request, Genie tells Aladdin to be more specific. “There’s a lot of gray area in ‘Make me a prince’,” he jokes. Later in the clip, the magical creature says, “You look like a prince on the outside but I didn’t change anything on the inside.”

Directed by Guy Ritchie, the studio’s live-action remake of Aladdin is based on the 1992 animated classic. The upcoming, highly-anticipated feature film stars Smith as the Genie, Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine and Marwan Kenzari as the evil Jafar, reported Variety.

The dazzling and colourful footage teases big musical numbers with tunes from the original film, including childhood favourites such as Friend Like Me and A Whole New World.

Marvel, Hulu join hands to make four animated superhero series

Disney has a number of live-action adaptations in the works this year, such as Tim Burton’s Dumbo and Jon Favreau’s The Lion King. Just last year, the studio released Mary Poppins Returns, a sequel to the 1964 musical fantasy starring British starlet Emily Blunt. It generated $347 million at the global box office.

Although the production of the film has been mired in one controversy after another, Aladdin finally hits theatres on May 24 this year. Needless to say, we can’t wait! If Disney’s other live-action remakes are anything to go by, this one will be a blast from the past we won’t forget for a long time.
