KARACHI:
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MPA Rabia Azfar Nizami had said that routine condolences cannot overcome the tragedy of Nimrah Baig’s death. Nor can they ensure the avoidance of such incidents in the future.

Nimrah Baig, a student of Dow Medical College, was killed by a stray bullet during a police encounter on February 22. According to Nizami, 3,345 people have been killed in similar incidents between January 2014 and May 2018. She also brought to attention the more recent case of Amal Umer on August 13, 2018. “But unfortunately, no corrective measures can be seen so far. Only more adventurism by the police,” said the MPA.

Nizami was of the opinion that the checkpoints in urban areas where the police stands armed with military grade guns in the name of security is a potentially hazardous situation.

“These events also reflect flaws in training,” she said. The MPA asked the Sindh chief minister (CM) to prioritise police reforms, terming it most critical.

She asked him to bring it in the House. “I demand Sindh CM and the capital city police officer (CCPO) to immediately review training programmes of police and revisit placement of pickets on the main road with heavy ammunition,” said Nizami.
