KARACHI: Hamdard University conferred on Saturday degrees on 1,400 students graduating from its seven faculties. A total of eight students were presented Hakim Mohammed Said gold medals and 34 were awarded Hamdard University gold medals.

A total of 190 students were awarded M Phil degrees and 10 were awarded PhD degrees.

The chief guest, President Dr Arif Alvi, said, "Knowledge-based economy is the key to progress in today's world and if we want to bring our nation out of poverty we have to promote education, knowledge and reduce poverty as has been done by China".

While addressing the students at the 23rd convocation, Dr Alvi said that the varsity's founder, Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said, chose to travel in economy class even during the time he held the position of Sindh governor. Nations are built by such icons, said Dr Alvi.

He told the students to work hard with honesty and integrity like the founder of their varsity. Pakistan is a great country and you should make it greater, he said.

She said, "Remember Abdul Sattar Edhi. He started with one solitary van, but now a fleet of Edhi ambulances cover the whole country".

Highlighting the performance of the varsity, Dr Shabibul Hasan said that the university had published over 480 research papers which appeared in peer-reviewed journals indexed by Thomson, Reuters and ISI Web of Knowledge that are recognised by Higher Education Commission.
