'Laal Kabootar' trailer is unlike anything we've seen before
Just like its teaser, the two minute clip of the Kamal Khan directorial is not giving much away
"Only fools think dreams come true," Ahmed Ali Akbar says right at the beginning of the trailer of Laal Kabootar, whilst crumbling a picture of Burj-ul-Arab.
From the looks of it, Ahmed is playing the role of a hustling taxi driver who had hoped to move out of Karachi and to Dubai. Then comes in Mansha Pasha's stubborn and strong Aliya Malik and the duo seem to be making some sort of deal. But Ahmed looks like he is failing to keep his word.
While the Kamal Khan directorial has definitely left us intrigued and is unlike anything we've seen in the Pakistani film industry before, we wonder if it's too jumbled up to be make sense?
For one thing, we hardly see the other pivotal characters of the film, such as Ali Kazmi, Saleem Mairaj and Rashid Faroqui. Just like its teaser, the two minute clip of Laal Kabootar is not giving much away.
In an interview with The Express Tribune earlier, Kamal revealed that Laal Kabootar is gritty and raw – an aesthetic he has proved he can handle with distinction. If anything, the film certainly stands out in terms of story telling. But will it work at the Pakistani box-office?
Kamal, however, is excited by the challenge. “I like the idea of doing something not so well and coming back and doing it better. I want to come back strong," he had said.
Laal Kabootar will hit cinemas on March 22, 2019, and it certainly strays from what the burgeoning film industry has to offer. According to Kamal, this Karachi-based crime drama that’s been a long time coming.
The film is produced by the sibling duo of Kamil and Hania Chima, who are both Harvard University graduates.
Laal Kabootar could be something that just might take the Pakistani film industry to a new direction. But will it really attract the audience with its innovative story-telling? Only time will tell.
