ISLAMABAD:

Serving at the National University of Modern Languages for over six years, the rector of the university Brig. (retd) Aziz Ahmed Khan on Friday was sacked by the Chief of Army Staff Gen. Ashfaq Pervaiz Kiyani.

Khan was called to the General Headquarters and was asked to relinquish the charge as the board of governors wanted to appoint a serving army officer of the rank of a General as head of the university, sources told The Express Tribune.

The change came after the management of the university was completely shifted to army. Director General, Brig. Azam Jamal was made the acting-rector.

The outgoing rector was always favoured by the board of governors as he managed to get away with almost every scandal, said an official.

He was accused of financial embezzlement, award of scholarships worth millions of rupees, appointments against the rules of his blood relations and several other irregularities during his tenure.
