Mcllroy grabs lead at US Open
Schwartzel, Yang share second place after first round.
BETHESDA:
Rory McIlroy fired a six-under par 65 to grab the lead after the first round at Congressional Country Club while Yang Yong-Eun, who became the only Asian man to win a major title by outdueling Tiger Woods in a final round, put himself in position to claim another major crown at the US Open.
The 39-year-old South Korean birdied all four par-three holes at Congressional Country Club on his way to a three-under par 71 and a share of second place with Masters champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, both three adrift of leader Rory McIlroy.
Spaniard Sergio Garcia, who challenged for a major crown at age 19 but has reached his 31st birthday still seeking his first major title, fired a 69 to share fourth, the same course where he won the 2005 Booz Allen Classic. Garcia would have shared second had he not taken a bogey at the final hole.
