LAHORE:
Hundreds of employees of an insurance company staged a protest outside the Lahore Press Club (LPC) on Tuesday against the abolition of the rank of sales officers.

The protesters claimed that the step would affect at least 200,000 workers across Pakistan. They also criticised the introduction of a new policy for the corporation. A protestor named Abdul Qayyum said the policy was to favour private companies.

Shah Nawaz, a protester, said the working of the corporation was based on three hierarchies; sales representatives, sales officers and sales managers. The government has decided to abolish the rank of sales officers. The step would affect 200,000 workers, he added.

Khalid Hussain, another protester, said this was being carried out on the orders of the chairperson of the company.

He said the job of sales officers was to recruit new workers such as sales representatives. The sales representatives would get a 35% commission and their prime job was marketing. A sales representative, who achieved the target of Rs1 million in two years, was promoted to the rank of a sales officer.

A sales officer would get 15% commission of the earnings. Then come sales managers who get 8% of the commission.
Authorities abolished the rank of sales officers and promoted 40,000 sales representatives to the rank of sales managers. For promotion to the rank of sales manager, a sales representative was supposed to generate Rs300,000 in three years. However, this was not practically possible for sales representatives.
Khalid added new recruits lacked experience. “The sales officers would mentor, guide and supervise them, he added.
