As the master plan of the federal capital is reviewed, work on revising the master plan of Rawalpindi has also started with the Traffic Engineering and Town Planning Department of the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) dispatching provisional terms to the relevant provincial official.
In this regards, the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the devising the master plan have been sent to the Punjab Housing secretary for approval.
This was decided during a meeting of the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) on Tuesday.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Naeemul Haq, who was attending the meeting, termed revisions in the master plan as inevitable for the city.
The 20-year master plan for 2020-2040, is estimated to cost some Rs500 million to formulate.
These expenses will be met through the Annual Development Programme (ADP).
Previously, master plans for the city were introduced in 1960 and then in 1996 by the Housing and Planning and the Improvement Trust. However, the plans were not fully implemented which made the situation in the city worse.
To overcome these issues and a boom in population, the city now requires a new master plan to cope with the rising requirements for water supply, sewerage system, electricity, gas, telephone connections, commercial and residential areas, traffic, industry, roads, streets, street lights, parks, green belts, parking lights, hospitals along with facilities at educational institutions.
Further, the revised master plan will divide sectors into residential and commercial areas so as to provide a peaceful environment for the people.
