Milleneium development goals: Responsible practices urged to achieve targets
‘There is a need to invest in human resource development’.
KARACHI:
The next ten years should be focused on implementing and ensuring that responsible business practices make a real change, with regard to improving the state of the world and achieving millennium development goals (MDGs), according to Ambassador of Switzerland to Pakistan Christoph Bubb.
Speaking at a conference on Wednesday, Bubb said that these goals cannot be achieved without active participation from the private sector as the driving force of the economy.
He said that such a shift was necessary as the private sector was a recognised and crucial partner in development, and played a very important role in the achievement of the MDGs and reducing worldwide poverty.
Switzerland acknowledges the Global Compact as a means not only to motivate businesses to adopt a responsible approach to management, but also to engage businesses in finding constructive, inclusive and innovative solutions to global challenges, he added.
The United Nations Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that want to align their operations and strategies with universally accepted principles.
United Nations Global Compact Executive Director George Kell emphasised the need for investment in human resource development.
Kell said that there was enormous potential in Pakistan for growth, adding that there was a need to collaborate between multi-national companies and local firms.
The day-long moot, was organised by the UN Global Compact Pakistan local network in collaboration with the Swiss Business Council and the Consulate General of Switzerland in Karachi.
