Karachi suffers another power breakdown

Tripping of units at the Guddu Thermal Power Plant led to a major power breakdown in Sindh and Balochistan

KARACHI: Tripping of units at the Guddu Thermal Power Plant led to a major power breakdown on Friday that affected various areas of Sindh and Balochistan. The breakdown affected various areas of Karachi with some deprived of electricity for nearly eight hours.

Officials maintained that dense fog was the main reason for the trip that led to the power suspension. They also said that the power supply could only be restored after the fog dissipated.

Massive power breakdown hits Balochistan, Sindh

According to officials, five out of 16 electricity units of Guddu Thermal Power Plant were already out of order. An additional 11 units tripped and resulted in the loss of 747 megawatts (MW) of electricity, thereby causing a massive disruption in the provincial power supply.

KE claimed it started work for power restoration at 11am and began restoring the power supply gradually in different parts of the city. Representatives from KE claimed that the power supply was restored completely throughout the city by 5pm after eight hours.
