Preparations for pheasant hunting complete
Three-day event will begin on February 8 in Kallar Kahar
LAHORE:
The Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department has completed preparations for pheasant hunting in the province. The three-day hunting event will be held in Kallar Kahar and will commence on February 8. National and international hunters will be allowed to participate in the competition.
A spokesperson for the department said that registrations will open on January 24 and will cost Rs1,000. In addition to this, hunters will be required to pay Rs15,000 as a hunting fee, including government tax. A single hunter can shoot a maximum of five pheasants in a single day.
The birds will be supplied by breeding centres in the province, including those located in Changa Manga, Jallu and Gatwala. Only surplus birds are used in the competition. Last year, around 200 birds were released while 45 hunters participated in the event. The department earned approximately Rs0.7 million from this venture.
This year, another 200 pheasants will be released into the wild. However, the final number of birds depends on the number of hunters which register for the three-day event.
Speaking to Express News, Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department Publicity Deputy Director Amir Masood stated that administrative committees have been formed. “All hunters must possess a hunting licence and a valid licence for their weapons,” he stressed.
An individual can hunt a maximum of five birds. Hunters will be allowed to use a single or double barrel gun or a hunting rifle, he maintained. He added that the initiative is meant to reduce the gap between the wildlife department and those who wish to hunt by promoting legal hunting. “Poaching should be discouraged as much as possible. Through such initiatives, we can protect the population of pheasants and other such birds,” he concluded.
