According to Twitter, accounts are suspended over spam, abuse, or if their security is at risk.

Gill, who is quite vocal with his views on Twitter, had nearly 48,000 followers.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's social media team claimed Dr Gill did not violate any Twitter rules.

"We request Twitter to look into the matter and lift the suspension immediately," the PTI demanded from Twitter.

Supporters of the ruling party were quick to criticise the micro-blogging site for the suspension, as well as calling for his account to be restored.

Last year, Twitter had suspended Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi’s official account.
