Peshawar’s trash heaps to be turned into parks

Tarakai says project part of government’s 100-day plan

PESHAWAR: In a bid to provide more spaces for recreation, the provincial government is devising a plan to turn all major trash dumps in the city into parks and greenbelts.

This was disclosed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Shahram Khan Tarkai on Sunday.

He stated that the Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) has identified dumping sites in the city which would be turned into small parks to provide recreational facilities to the ever-growing population.

As per the plan, the solid waste from these sites will be shifted to a safe location for their proper disposal. Without providing many details on where and how the waste would be moved to or dealt with, he said that the dumps will be converted into recreational parks and green belts using ornamental plants, he said.

Tarakai further said that this project had was part of their government’s 100-day plan. The minister noted that due to the construction of the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) project, the number of flyovers and bridges in Peshawar had increased and a comprehensive plan has now been chalked out to transform areas underneath these bridges into green belts.
