NED University organises the biggest convocation

27,015 students from various depts of the varsity graduated of which, 1,885 were conferred degrees

KARACHI:
=A total of 27,015 students from various departments of the NED University graduated of which, 1,885 were conferred degrees on Saturday at the 27th convocation ceremony. The convocation ceremony was attended by Sindh governor and Sindh chief minister at the university’s sports ground.

Four students were awarded PhD degrees while gold medals and cash prizes were given to 27 students who had displayed outstanding performance.

A university alumnus, Computer and Structure Incorporated US Chief Executive Officer Ashraf Habibullah, 72, was invited as the chief guest. He wore a special red-coloured jacket with white lights and congratulated the students in his unique way. The hall echoed with laughter when he said that he could say anything with this jacket on because everyone was busy noticing the jacket. He said that the basic principle of humanity is to do good to others and improve the quality of life.

Sindh Governor Imran Ismail said that NED was an internationally-recognised, reputed institution that has a history of at least nine decades. He said that NED graduates are the pride and asset of this country.

Ismail said that NED University was ensuring the provision of research in higher education which directly played a role in the nation’s development and economy. He added that the institute had been able to make prominent efforts in the research sector because of strong faculty and administrative structure. He said that the promotion of research at the university was the need of the time.


He further said that the NED graduates had proven their abilities in every department. He said, “No society can develop without education and the propagation of higher education is the primary preference of the government”. He said that students could play a key role in establishing the soft image of Pakistan.

Ismail said that the teachers and parents deserve to be congratulated the same as the students today. Appreciating the chief guest’s speech, Ismail said, “Your speech has stolen the show. You are such a fine speaker that everyone was listening to you very fondly. I’m thinking about inviting you to PTI’s [Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf] next election campaign”.

400 students awarded degrees in different disciplines

NED University Vice-Chancellor Dr Sarosh Hashmat Lodhi said that we have four national centres, Centre for Cyber Security, Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Centre for Data Analytics and Centre for Robotics. He added that a fifth, National Centre for Neo Technology, would also soon be launched.

Lodhi said that these centres were providing research opportunities to the students. He said that NED was the only varsity to offer mandatory Chinese Language course, which he hoped would prove beneficial for the students in the future given the scope of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project.
