GHORA GAL:

Investment in people is extremely necessary for Pakistan to become a strong and prosperous country.

This was stated by Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh during the launch ceremony of commemorative Rs20 coins at Lawrence College on Monday.

The coins have been issued to mark the college’s 150th anniversary (1860-2010). A total of 100,000 coins were distributed among all offices of the State Bank of Pakistan from May 28. They also feature the words “150 Year Celebration - Lawrence College Ghora Gali Murree” inscribed on them. Existing Rs20 notes will continue as legal tender.

During his address, Shaikh said everyone should play their role in the development of the country. He appreciated the staff for providing quality education to students. The principal thanked the minister and secretary for taking out their time and participating in the launch. Later, the chief guest presented coins to members of the alumni.

Later, while talking to APP, Shaikh said the government had transferred Rs700 billion to the provinces under the 7th NFC award, which would be spent for social sector development including health, education, poverty alleviation and human resources.

He said the government was providing funds to the Higher Education Commission to continue its endeavours despite devolving the education sector.
