Everyone seems to consume bowls and bowls of chicken soup when they fall sick. While this seems to be the norm, how many of you know the actual reason it's so good for you? Not many, we're guessing.

There are many ways the broth of a soup brings relief. Not only does a hearty bowl of chicken noodle soup clear nasal congestion, it also eases cold symptoms, reported Business Standard. Here's how...

"A clear broth is warm and soothing, making it a great source of hydration while you are sick, especially if you have a sore throat," says Sandy Allonen, clinical dietician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston.

Chicken is high in tryptophan which is an essential amino acid. This helps the body produce serotonin which can enhance your mood and give you the feeling of 'comfort', the dietician further provided. Serotonin is a chemical that contributes to wellbeing and happiness.

The meat offers a number of benefits as it is high in protein which helps the immune system. It is also a good source of vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B, which further boosts immunity and helps with digestion.

Other than chicken, adding vegetables such as carrots, celery, and onions in a soup is very beneficial. These contain vitamins C and K, as well as other antioxidants and minerals. "Not only does this help build a healthy system to fight off viruses, it also helps your body recover from illness more quickly," Allonen states.
