Aleem stresses need to promote night tourism

Says people need to be made aware that such steps are in their best interest

Senior Punjab Minister Abdul Aleem Khan has said that apart from the preservation of national heritage, steps should be taken to promote night tourism in and around the walled city of Lahore.

He added that in other cities of Punjab like Multan, Bhera, Kasur and Chakwal etc, heritage projects would be initiated and the masses would be made aware that such activities are in their best interest. He made these observations while presiding over a high level meeting of the Walled City Lahore Authority.

Secretary local bodies, Lahore commissioner, deputy commissioner and WCL Authority DG were present, along with other high ranking officers. Abdul Aleem Khan said that apart from persevering national heritage, residents of the walled city should also be given better living facilities and standard of life. He said that there is still a wide scope for the promotion of tourism activities in and around the walled city. For this purpose, he said, awareness should be created among the masses so that they play their role in national service.


He said that international companies should be invited to put their efforts to promote better entertainment. Abdul Aleem Khan said that this region has a rich heritage which is widely hailed around the globe. “People from other countries have great trend to visit here.”

The senior Minister ordered further steps for the removal of all kind of encroachments in the walled city and ensure that 100 percent of government land has been evacuated. He said that in the light of the directions of the courts, there should be no relaxation to anybody in this regard and strict compliance should be ensured in all areas including the walled city.

In the meeting, he given a detailed briefing by the DC on the encroachment drive and told that so far, government land, worth billions of rupees, has been evacuated and the steps were taken in view of Google maps. Director General of the Walled City Authority Kamran Lashari told the meeting that with the collaboration of UNESCO and other international institutions, a number of steps have been taken to restore the Shahi Qila and other buildings inside the walled city. He said that by the end of March 2019, three major projects would be ready got inauguration and bring in big tourism.

Senior Minister said that cleanliness work around the walled city should also be completed on a priority basis. He stressed that the garbage dumping site in front of Data Darbar should be removed to establish a park there. Secretary Local Bodies Capt (Retd) Anjum Saif and Commissioner Lahore Mujtaba Paracha also spoke about different issues in the meeting.
