ISLAMABAD/LAHORE:
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has decided to run a mass contact campaign and to give the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led federal government a tough time if an accountability court on December 24 convicts its supreme leader Nawaz Sharif.

A PML-N meeting, held on Thursday in the Parliament House, was chaired by Sharif and the party president, Shehbaz Sharif, to discuss the forthcoming judgement of the accountability court which on Wednesday reserved its verdict on two corruption references against the former premier.

According to sources, the meeting, which was attended by the party’s central leaders, decided that Shehbaz’s son Hamza Shehbaz will handle important affairs of the party in any emergency situation.

Shehbaz Sharif is already in custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) which is all set to file a reference against him in an accountability court in connection with a housing scheme case.

The sources said the meeting decided to set up 30-member committee to run affairs of the party in case of Nawaz Sharif’s conviction. The committee includes Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Ahsan Iqbal, Rana Sanaulla, Khawaja Asif, Hamza Shehbaz, Mushahidullah Khan and Ayaz Sadiq among others.

The PML-N lawmakers were advised to speak with full preparations on the issue in parliament and during the public contact campaign. National and public interest should be given priority in all situations, the meeting noted.

The meeting also expressed concern over the economic situation and agreed that there was a need to activate the party on social media. According to NNI, foundation day of the party will be celebrated in Lahore on December 30.

If Sharif is not convicted then he will address the gathering. According to the sources, the PML-N also decided to give the government a tough time in parliament and to contact other opposition parties.

Addressing the participants, Sharif said he used politics as a means of service and never used it for corruption. “People know the reason behind cases filed against the PML-N leaders. All the cases are based on assumptions and estimations,” he added.

Nawaz Sharif also had a one-on-one meeting with Shehbaz Sharif during which they exchanged views on the expected judgement of the accountability court and other issues.

Speaking to media, Nawaz Sharif said the present government has increased inflation to such a degree that the poor man’s backbone is broken. “The PML-N governments have always promoted the development and progress of the country,” he said.
