Decision to hire Iranian coach backed
Appointment depends on sponsors for volleyball federation.
KARACHI:
Pakistan volleyball players have welcomed the decision to hire Iranian coach Ali Reza Moameri as the team prepares for the forthcoming Kazakhstan International Volleyball Tournament due to be held next month.
According to the Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF) Chairman Chaudhry Mohammad Yaqoob, the decision is not finalised and depends on finding sponsors to fund Moameri’s salary that amounts to $4,000 a month. Yaqoob said that Moameri’s appointment was important since Pakistan had the potential to establish themselves as one of the top teams in the world.
“We have players like Aimal Khan who is six feet seven inches tall,” Yaqoob told The Express Tribune. “We want to groom them and that is why we are calling Moameri.”
Moameri’s expertise would help
Mohammad Naseer, who has been playing for different clubs in Dubai, said that Iran was one of the top teams in Asia and Moameri’s expertise would bring about a lot of improvement. He recalled that when the Iranian helped Pakistan in 2008, the country bagged bronze medal in the Asian Volleyball Championship and there was no reason the feat cannot be repeated.
Pakistan captain Ismail Khan added that Pakistan Sports Board should support the volleyball federation since the sport was popular in the country.
“Moameri has the skill to make Pakistan competitive,” he said. “It’s worked for Iran and would benefit us as well.”
