Schoolchildren celebrate World Monkey Day at Lahore Zoo

Pupils take part in various activities including skits highlighting threats the animal facing these days

LAHORE: Clad in different types of monkey costumes, a large number of schoolchildren visited Lahore Zoo to celebrate World Monkey Day on Friday.

It is an unofficial international day dedicated to the monkey and marked on December 14 across the world. World Monkey Day was created and promoted by artists Eric Millikin and Casey Sorrow back in the year 2000.

At the Lahore Zoo, children, who had come from different schools of the city, cut a cake, recited poems and performed skits highlighting the evolution of monkeys and the threats the animal faces these days. The children also visited cages at the zoo and enjoyed feeding the monkeys.

According to the Punjab Wildlife Protection Department (PWPD), the race of local monkey is growing in Murree and Galiyat.

The Lahore Zoo, in collaboration with the PWPD, organised the event, where aarious activities were organised for children. PWPD Deputy Director Mohammad Naeem Bhatti, Lahore Zoo Deputy Director Sajid Latif and others officers attended the event.

Speaking to Express News, Bhatti said that the number of monkeys in Punjab's green mountain areas is increasing due to operations conducted against hunting and catching baby monkeys.

The children were given information about monkeys and their habitat. They were also given the message on World Monkey Day that these creatures love human beings and their hunting must be stopped.
